Both the Original Stira folding attic stairs and the Heavy Duty Stira are highly customisable, they are designed to allow us to be very flexible with regards ceilings heights and frames sizes. Our factory is also laid out to facilitate rapid building of unique bespoke loft ladders made to customers needs. The standard lead time on a custom built Stira is two weeks.
High ceilings
The Custom Built Stira remote control upgrade for Stira folding attic stairs makes high ceilings possible. Before we put an electric motor on our stairs our limit was 10ft, our spring loaded counter balance system simply couldn’t hold the trapdoor closed due to the weight and length of the trapdoor. Adding a latch wasn’t an option as it would make opening the stairs dangerous as it could fall open to fast. The remote control option overcomes these problems and allows us to go right up to 14ft. It also allows us to make the frame length much longer bringing the bottom of the trapdoor down closer to the ground making unfolding the ladder form the trapdoor much easier.

Large frame sizes
The Stira’s innerframe allows us to custom build a Stira with frame width up to 48” (122cm) and 98” (245cm). Our strong innerframe maintains the overall strength of the stairs at these large frame sizes. For people that may have difficulty operating a loft
ladder we can build a bespoke Stira that is easier to use. The main difficulty can often be unfolding the ladder from the trapdoor. We can custom build a Stira with an extra long frame so when the trapdoor is opened down it is closer to the ground and the two bottom sections of the ladder are much smaller and easier to deal with.
Consultation
Each custom built Stira starts with a consultation with a Stira engineer where we get the details of the customers needs and what they want to achieve with the loft ladder. We will go through the options and help the customer build a folding attic stairs that not only suits their needs but is also easy to use. We can provide CAD drawings of the stairs before production begins so that drawings can be passed onto architects and builders.
Our new Custom Built Stira page in our online shop opens up nearly all the options available on a custom built Stira so you can get an instant quote and play around with the sizes and options to get the stairs you want.
Additional Options
Double action ladder: The double action ladder allows the Stira to be used in tight spaces. When unfolding a loft ladder the ladder will arc out past the end of the frame. If your attic access hatch is next to a wall this can mean it’s impossible to unfold the ladder from the trapdoor.

The double action ladder adds an additional fold to the middle section of the ladder allowing it to open straight down. Stira folding attic stairs are unique in that they can be custom built to the customers needs.
Custom trapdoor lid: The Stira trapdoor lid is left untreated so that the customer can paint it to suit there own home, this usually means painting it the same colour as the ceiling. However we can replace the standard pine ply lid with a number of alternatives.
- Timber lath lids are popular, we use pine laths, we can make this out of any type of timber however we do not keep a stock of any other type of timber.
- We can also make the lid out of transparent perspex, this will allow light down from the attic however there would be no insulation.
- A Fire rated lid can also be fitted* Currently under review to improve FR duration.
